Australian Olympian Melissa Hoskins has died at the age of 32 after being struck by a car outside the couple’s home in Adelaide.
Her husband, former Olympic cyclist and world champion Rohan Dennis, has received a suspended jail sentence in connection with the crash that led to her death.
Hoskins, also an Australian Olympian, was fatally injured on December 30, 2023, after being hit by a vehicle near their Adelaide residence.
Dennis was handed a prison sentence of one year, four months, and 28 days.
However, the sentence was suspended on the condition that he enter into a two-year good behaviour bond.
Additionally, Dennis’s driver’s licence has been suspended.
The 34-year-old appeared in the South Australia District Court on Wednesday, having earlier pleaded guilty to an aggravated offence likely to cause harm.
Ms Hoskins competed for Australia in the team pursuit track cycling events at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
She was also a member of the team that secured the world championship title in 2015.
The couple married in 2018 and shared two children.
Dennis retired from professional cycling at the end of the 2023 season, concluding a successful career that included two world time trial championships.
He also claimed an Olympic bronze medal in the time trial event in Tokyo.
In addition, he earned a silver medal in the team pursuit at the London Olympics and wore the yellow jersey during the 2015 Tour de France after winning the opening time trial.
