As he continues to recover, Kavan Markwood recently spoke briefly with a local newspaper about his condition following a serious fall at a Pirates game.
Markwood, who fell more than 20 feet onto the field at PNC Park last week, told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that he’s struggling with sleep due to significant back pain. He also reported injuries to his neck and back, a swollen hand, and said he plans to apply ice once he’s home. He expects to remain hospitalized for about another week.
The 20-year-old former college football player was initially listed in critical condition after the fall, which left him with a broken neck, back, and clavicle, according to officials. He was able to walk for the first time earlier this week.
The exact cause of the fall is still unknown. Video footage captured Markwood, who was sitting in the front row, tumbling several times through the air before landing on the field. Authorities are treating the incident as accidental. The Pirates told KDKA-TV that Markwood had consumed two beers, but it’s unclear whether alcohol played a role, as witness statements varied.
Meanwhile, an online fundraiser for his recovery has raised over $56,000 as of Thursday.
