The former Alabama quarterback and current ESPN analyst has never shied away from expressing his opinions, often sparking intense debates within the sports community.
Recently, McElroy found himself at the center of controversy following remarks he made about USC quarterback Caleb Williams, leading to a heated exchange that captured the attention of fans and media alike.
The incident began when McElroy appeared on Kevin Clark’s “This is Football” podcast. During the discussion, McElroy praised Williams’ talent but voiced a concern regarding the quarterback’s experience with adversity.
He suggested that Williams had not faced significant challenges during his collegiate career, stating, “Caleb Williams has never experienced adversity… I do wonder, is there a sense of entitlement, is there the chip on the shoulder that’s going to keep him going 10-12 years down the road the way it does Mahomes.”
Williams, projected to be the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, did not take these comments lightly. He responded on social media, detailing the obstacles he had encountered:
- Year 1: Did not start during his freshman year.
- Year 2: Suffered a hamstring injury in the first quarter of the championship game, which contributed to his team’s loss.
- Year 3: Endured a 7-5 season in his final year of college football.
Williams’ retort highlighted that, contrary to McElroy’s assertions, he had faced and overcome significant challenges during his time at Oklahoma and USC.

In 2018, he defended South Carolina’s head coach Will Muschamp against a caller’s suggestion that Muschamp should be fired. Thibodeaux remarked, “I already hate the stigmatism of football players being dumb jocks… do you know the stigmatism of Alabama education? It ain’t the West Coast.

In January 2024, he made disparaging remarks about former Alabama offensive lineman Alphonse Taylor, calling him “the laziest dude on the roster.” Recognizing his mistake, McElroy reached out to Taylor to apologize both privately and publicly, stating, “I reached out to Alphonse Taylor to apologize to him privately.
Now, I’m taking the opportunity to apologize publicly to start the show. That’s how important it is.”
Despite these controversies, McElroy continues to be a respected voice in college football analysis. His recent comments about USC’s trajectory demonstrate his commitment to providing candid assessments.
On his “Always College Football” podcast, McElroy discussed how USC, after a disappointing end to the 2023 season, is now trending upward due to strategic coaching changes.
He praised the hiring of defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn from UCLA and the addition of former North Dakota State head coach Matt Entz as the linebackers coach, stating, “I think he’s gotten it right with some of the hires he’s made defensively.”
