Pirates bolster outfield with veteran Tommy Pham
PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates have added a veteran presence to their outfield, signing free agent Tommy Pham to a one-year contract. The deal, announced Sunday, is worth $4.025 million, according to sources.
Pham, who turns 37 next month, has had a nomadic career, playing for nine different teams over his 11 MLB seasons. Last year, he split time between the St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago White Sox, and Kansas City Royals, batting .248 with nine home runs and 39 RBIs.
While not a star, Pham has been a consistent contributor throughout his career, known for his hustle and baseball IQ. He’s expected to bring a veteran presence to a young Pirates team and provide some pop from the left side of the plate.
The signing comes as the Pirates continue to reshape their roster this offseason. They’ve already re-signed fan favorite Andrew McCutchen and added infielder Adam Frazier and left-handed reliever Tim Mayza.
Pham’s contract includes incentives that could earn him an additional $250,000. He’ll be looking to prove he still has something left in the tank as he enters his 12th MLB season.
