West Virginia baseball may have missed the chance to host an NCAA Regional due to a late-season slump, but they still have a shot at a national title in the postseason.
On Monday, the NCAA Tournament bracket was announced, placing the Mountaineers in the Clemson Regional in South Carolina. Clemson, one of 16 top-seeded teams, earned hosting rights as the No. 11 overall seed. West Virginia enters the regional as the No. 2 seed.
The Clemson Regional also features No. 3 seed Kentucky and No. 4 seed USC Upstate. Regional play begins Friday, May 30th, and runs through Monday, May 2nd. The format is a four-team, double-elimination bracket. West Virginia opens against Kentucky, while Clemson takes on USC Upstate in an in-state showdown.
The Mountaineers and Wildcats will meet at Noon EST on May 30th, with the game airing on ESPNU. Clemson and USC Upstate will follow at 6 PM EST on the ACC Network. The outcomes of these games will determine matchups and scheduling for the remainder of the regional.
West Virginia enters postseason play having lost seven of their last nine games, including a tough showing in the Big 12 Tournament, after starting the year with just seven losses in their first 46 games. To cap off their historic season positively, the Mountaineers must overcome their recent struggles — as the stakes are now high and every loss could mean the end of their journey.
