“The relief has never been so great” – Wout van Aert’s wife details ecstasy of Giro d’Italia triumph

Sunday brought a long-awaited and emotional victory for Wout van Aert, as he claimed his first win of the 2025 season in the historic streets of Siena. Riding for Team Visma | Lease a Bike, van Aert delivered a breathtaking performance on the gravel, earning a memorable stage win in what many are calling one of the most unforgettable moments of this year’s Giro d’Italia.

After enduring a tough start to the season and facing several setbacks, van Aert’s triumph was a powerful symbol of resilience and redemption. Known for his bold and inspiring rides, this success felt long overdue and deeply earned.

It was a remarkable win from a rider who has provided countless unforgettable moments throughout his career.

The emotional weight of the moment was felt most deeply by his wife, Sarah De Bie. Speaking to HLN after the stage, she expressed just how meaningful the victory was for their family: “We’ve never felt such relief,” she shared.

“It really means a lot that it came together here again,” she said.

Describing the finish, De Bie laughed about the joyful chaos of the moment. “(laughs) I didn’t reach the finish line in time with the stroller. I couldn’t actually see Wout win, but I noticed from the soigneur’s reaction that he had. I was ecstatic. I think Georges was a bit startled too. The relief this time was unlike anything we’ve experienced before. (laughs) Georges immediately asked if daddy also had the pink jersey.”

For van Aert, the win represented far more than just a stage result—it was a payoff for months of dedication and struggle.

“Wout finally sees the results of his hard work—both mentally and physically,” De Bie added. “This win means a great deal to him. It will definitely boost his confidence. Given everything he’s been through, I’d say this is the most meaningful victory of his career.”
