After a period in the Mexican League, former first-round MLB Draft pick Beau Burrows is making his way back to the U.S. on a minor-league contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Burrows, now 28 years old, was the 22nd overall selection in the 2015 MLB Draft by the Detroit Tigers, coming out of Weatherford High School in Texas.
The right-hander debuted in the majors with the Tigers during the shortened 2020 season, appearing in five games.
A 5.40 ERA that year kept Burrows in the minors to start the 2021 season. Following a rough outing in his 2021 debut in June, the Tigers designated him for assignment, and he was subsequently claimed by the Minnesota Twins.
That year, Burrows made five appearances—including one start—for the Twins before being sent outright to Triple-A in August.
Over the next few seasons, he bounced around in the minors, spending time with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves, and Philadelphia Phillies organizations.
The right-hander first appeared in the majors with the Tigers in 2020, seeing action in five games during the pandemic-shortened season.
A 5.40 ERA that season led to a minor-league assignment to start 2021. But after struggling in a June call-up, he was designated for assignment and picked up by the Twins.
He pitched in five games for Minnesota, including one start, before being reassigned to Triple-A in August.
In the years that followed, Burrows had minor-league stints with the Dodgers, Braves, and Phillies.
In June 2024, he joined the Cleburne Railroaders, an independent league team, and by April 2025, he signed on with the Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos of the Mexican League.
Despite his 9.53 ERA with Dos Laredos, reports suggest his fastball is currently reaching 97–98 mph.
Several players from Dos Laredos have recently joined MLB organizations, including third baseman Nick Senzel (Dodgers) and pitchers Cory Abbott (Rangers), Andrew Vasquez (Angels), and Nick Margevicius (Tigers), all on minor-league deals.
