The Pittsburgh Pirates are enduring one of the roughest seasons in Major League Baseball. Their struggles reached a breaking point recently with the dismissal of manager Derek Shelton. Adding to the turmoil, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reports that the organization appears reluctant to invest financially in improving the team.
Nightengale revealed that, according to information from the players union and multiple MLB owners, the Pirates are among the league’s most profitable franchises. However, instead of putting their revenue-sharing funds back into the team, they have allegedly been stockpiling the money year after year.
The team’s owner, Bob Nutting, is widely unpopular among fans in Pittsburgh. Supporters have openly expressed their frustration, chanting for him to sell the team during games at PNC Park this season.
To make matters worse, the Pirates’ offense ranks among the league’s weakest. With a record of 13-27, the 2025 season already seems to be slipping away.
