A Pittsburgh Pirates fan who fell from a 21-foot outfield wall at PNC Park has been identified as Kavan Markwood, a former high school football star, and he remains in critical condition following the incident on Wednesday.
According to reports from TribLive, ESPN, and The Athletic, Markwood graduated from South Allegheny High School in 2022, where he was named the football team’s MVP in his senior year. He later played college football at Walsh University and Wheeling University.
Laura Thomson, a spokeswoman for South Allegheny School District, described Markwood as a determined and resilient individual who is well-known and deeply supported within the tight-knit community. “He’s a fighter,” she said, emphasizing the community’s prayers and support.
His former football coach, Frank Cortazzo, praised Markwood not only as a talented athlete but also as an exceptional person. “His resilience, heart, and strength are truly unmatched,” Cortazzo said, urging others to keep Markwood and his loved ones in their thoughts during this difficult time.
