Former FIFA referee Keith Hackett believes UEFA will investigate after Olympiacos fans were seen throwing objects at Rangers players during the 1-1 Europa League draw on 7 November. BBC Sportsound’s Liam McLeod reported that protective netting shielded Rangers’ Vaclav Cerny from being struck by projectiles from the crowd. Hackett explained that UEFA appoints match delegates to monitor incidents, and these delegates have the authority to escalate warnings or even halt play if disturbances persist.
Hackett told Ibrox News that it’s “unacceptable” for objects to be thrown, and UEFA may take retrospective action against Olympiacos. He detailed UEFA’s process for such incidents, including warning announcements, enhanced security, and potentially removing players from the field. Olympiacos could face penalties, such as playing a future game behind closed doors.
Despite the incident, Rangers fans showed strong support, and Philippe Clement’s team delivered a promising performance, nearly securing all three points. Given previous fines, such as Rangers’ for fan fireworks against Lyon, Olympiacos might expect similar consequences this time.
